Times Higher Education has released its 2027 World University rankings, placing MSU at No. 93, an improvement of 12 spots over last year and the university’s highest place in the ranking since 2022.
The rank of 93 out of 2,297 institutions places MSU in the top 5% in the world. Among the 168 colleges and universities ranked in the United States, MSU’s standing improved by three — to No. 35.
“Being ranked as a top 100 university by Times Higher Education, one of the four major global rankings, is a distinct honor, indicative of our academic prowess as a leading global, public research university,” said MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D. “This recognition belongs to our exceptional faculty, staff and researchers, who continue to help elevate MSU on the world stage.”
The Times Higher Education ranking methodology has been the same for the past four years and includes 17 metrics across five categories.
The jump in rankings this year is attributed primarily to higher scores on the ranking’s research environment category, which includes the faculty reputation survey, publications-per-faculty and research income per faculty.
MSU’s worldwide rank of No. 93 places the university at No. 10 among the 18 Big Ten institutions. Eight Big Ten universities improved in rank an average of six places. MSU’s jump from No. 105 to No. 93 was the largest.
Times Higher Education is one of four major global rankings.
