MSU maintains high ranking for research by Washington Monthly

Michigan State University continues to maintain its standing as a leading research university, ranking No. 45 overall and No. 26 among public institutions as one of the “Best Colleges for Research” in Washington Monthly’s rankings for this year.

“Our world-class faculty, dedicated staff and curious students at Michigan State University are translating scientific inquiry into practical, real-world solutions that advance knowledge and benefit communities at home and around the world,” said MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz, Ph.D. “This ranking is a reflection of their efforts and the nearly $1 billion in research expenditures being put to work at MSU to drive local and global impact.”

Washington Monthly’s methodology for research rankings was revised last year. It is based on the amount of research expenditures, the number of doctorates awarded, and the number of faculty scholarly awards using data averaged over the past three years.

“This ranking reflects the people behind the research — faculty, staff, postdocs and students working across agriculture, health, advanced manufacturing, national security, the fundamental sciences and beyond to turn curiosity into solutions that matter,” said Shashank Priya, MSU vice president for Research and Innovation. “That’s the spirit we’re building on: expanding research, deepening partnerships and investing in the talent and infrastructure that position MSU among the nation’s top research universities today and in the years ahead.”

MSU’s ranking in Washington Monthly’s main (non-research) assessment improved 15 places to No. 65 across all four-year public institutions.

The main (non-research) rankings consist of four equally weighted categories: access, affordability, student outcomes and community/national service.
