Spring blossoms surround Yakeley Hall. The West Circle residence hall is is named after Elida Yakeley, MSU’s first registrar who conceived the idea that registration and grades could be input by machine. Knowing the names of nearly every student was something Yakeley took pride in. We wonder how she’d fare today with nearly 50,000 students compared to approximately 500 during her time. While the Spring Class of 2021 is ironing their gowns and decorating their caps, MSU is getting ready for commencement by setting up outdoor venues at Spartan Stadium and the Breslin Center. Photo by Nick Schrader.
A crew from the Creative Day production company helps set the stage for commencement at Spartan Stadium. With the creation of outdoor venues like the one being built in the parking lot of Spartan Stadium, over 50 ceremonies will be held to celebrate the accomplishments of graduates safely and in person. With so many flowers in bloom, W.J. Beal Botanical garden becomes a perfect backdrop for graduation photos. Spring 2021 commencement ceremonies begin on Friday, April 30 for undergraduate degrees; more information can be found on commencement.msu.edu. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.

Refueling for the second half of the day, students snag an off-campus lunch near the Broad Business College. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
A sugar maple blooms near Eustace-Cole Hall. Sugar maple trees are one of the main sources of sap for maple syrup, and MSU’s Department of Forestry has been researching maple syrup production on campus and in Michigan for more than 100 years. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
Like people, trees come in all shapes and states of being. The Resilient Tree near Beaumont Tower continues to breathe life with the support of another. MSU’s Office of Sustainability has dubbed Spring 2021 the “Semester of the Trees”, honoring the over 20,000 trees on campus. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
A symbol of happiness and hope, yellow tulips add a pop of color near Abrams Planetarium. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
