September campus events at MSU

As summer winds down and a new semester begins, September brings plenty of opportunities to get involved on campus. Whether you’re settling into a new routine or looking for things to add to your calendar, here are some events worth checking out this month.

Sept. 1

• Tie Dye Under the Sky - The University Activities Board, Residence Hall Association and Impact 89FM invite students to tie-dye custom MSU T-shirts while supplies last.

Sept. 2

• Blood Drive for We Give Blood Challenge - Participate in Abbott and Big Ten’s We Give Blood Competition by donating blood. Big Ten schools are competing for $1 million to advance student or community health.

Sept. 3

• Grow Green - Looking to green up your living space? Grow Green with UAB at this plant-your-own succulent event! All materials are provided while supplies last.
• Silent Disco Under the Stars - The MSU Museum transforms the Beal Botanical Garden into an open-air dance floor. Grab wireless headphones, choose your music channel and dance the night away under the stars with fellow Spartans.

Sept. 9

• Creative Collaboratory: Fall Opening Celebration - Celebrate the fall semester at the MSU Museum with the opening of new exhibitions, including Reality Check and Gaawii Eta-Go Aawizinoo Gaawiye Mkakoons / It’s Not Just a Quill Box.

Sept. 10

• Spartan Remix - Spartan Remix is an annual multicultural welcome festival celebrating art, music and culture while bringing together diverse communities across campus.
• Beal Botanical Garden Tour: Rewilding Beal - Explore Beal Botanical Garden’s history and future through rewilding on a guided tour of the garden.

Sept. 11

• Jazz Swing Dance - The MSU Jazz Orchestras open the season with an evening of timeless swing and big band classics — audience dancing encouraged.

Sept. 15

• Ensemble Affect: Colonial Baroque - Ensemble Affect explores America’s colonial musical heritage in a program celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Sept. 17

• Speculative Futures: Latinx Futures in Comics - Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with comic artist and writer Terry Blas in a conversation and hands-on workshop exploring storytelling and imagined futures through comics.
• BealFest: Wild Harmony - Celebrate the return to campus at BealFest, with music, games and activities inspired by the balance between campus life and the natural world.

Sept. 18

• Piano Homecomings: Four Hands - MSU piano alumni Yaju Chuang and Zhao Wang perform piano four-hands works by women composers spanning the late Romantic era through today.

Sept. 18-20

• Beetlejuice - Based on Tim Burton’s beloved film, Beetlejuice follows Lydia Deetz as she encounters a recently deceased couple and the mischievous demon Beetlejuice.

Sept. 19

• YOU ARE PREPARED: A pop-up training center for self-optimization - Experience an interactive art installation exploring the tech-fueled pursuit of self-optimization through movement-controlled games.

Sept. 20

• Keyboard Conversations - Experience the rare pairing of piano and organ as MSU artist-faculty Hae Won Jang and Deborah Moriarty perform beloved arranged works.

Sept. 21

• Musique 21: Atmospheres - Musique 21 presents an evening of contemporary works exploring ethereal sound worlds, shifting sonic colors, and innovative instrumental combinations.

Sept. 22

• Symphony Band - Under the direction of David Thornton, the MSU Symphony Band presents a dynamic program featuring works by Jack Stamp, Kelijah Dunton, Percy Grainger, and Fisher Tull.

Sept. 23

• Beal Footprints: Fall Blooms and Foliage - Join Beal in a walk, exploring the garden as it begins its transition from summer to fall.
• Ensemble Dal Niente - Chicago-based Ensemble Dal Niente performs a dynamic program of contemporary works by Ricardo Lorenz, Wang Lu, Bernard Rands and more.

Sept. 24

• The Doctor Will See You Now: A conversation on AI in healthcare - MSU medical students lead a conversation on how artificial intelligence is changing medical education, practice and patient care.
• Wind Symphony - The Wind Symphony opens its season with a dynamic program featuring works by Ricardo Lorenz, Otar Gordeli, Aaron Copland and David Maslanka.

Sept. 25

• Symphony Orchestra, “Spring Dawn to American Horizons” - The MSU Symphony Orchestra opens its season with works by Lili Boulanger and Aaron Copland, culminating in the iconic “Fanfare for the Common Man.”

Sept. 27

• World Ballet Company: Swan Lake - With Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable score soaring through the air and played LIVE, immerse yourself in this mesmerizing journey where dreams, heartbreak and hope unfold right before your eyes.
• Americana: Gay Nineties, Vaudeville, and Musical Theatre - MSU vocalists Anne Nispel and Harlan Jennings, with pianist Elden Little, celebrate the Gay Nineties, vaudeville, musical theatre and La belle époque.

Sept. 28

• Spotlight: Broadway’s Leading Ladies - Soprano Melanie Helton and pianist Derek Polischuk celebrate Broadway’s legendary leading ladies with selections from beloved classic musicals.

Sept. 29

• Hollander Lecture: American Artist - American Artist makes thought experiments that mine the history of technology, race and knowledge production, beginning with their legal name change in 2013.

Sept. 30

• Quillwork: Demonstration and Talk - Join Anishinaabe-Lakota artist and fifth-generation quill worker Monica Raphael for a talk and live demonstration exploring the art, history and cultural knowledge of quillwork.
• The Art of Verse and Sound: Debussy’s Preludes, Book II - Stanislav Khristenko and students pair Debussy’s Preludes, Book II with poetry, exploring the connection between music, language and spoken word.
