Recent rainfall caused the Red Cedar River in East Lansing to rise to approximately 8.1 feet, resulting in minor flooding in areas along the river and nearby campus infrastructure. Several parking lots, sidewalks and bike paths were temporarily closed, particularly in low-lying areas and near construction zones. A flood warning remains in effect through April 9.
Affected areas include parking lots on Service Road and Chestnut Road, areas near Jenison Field House and pedestrian routes along the river between the Alumni Memorial Chapel, Farm Lane bridge, Beal Botanical Garden and the Kellogg Center. Portions of Old College Field and areas north of the Business College Complex are also impacted.
As water levels continue to recede, some areas have reopened, including portions of the Jenison parking areas and nearby sidewalks. Additional pedestrian routes north of Jenison are expected to reopen as conditions improve, though some locations remain closed due to sediment and debris left behind by the river.
“There’s a lot of sediment in the river trail and surrounding walks,” said Matthew Bailey from Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, who noted that cleanup efforts are required before all areas can safely reopen.
IPF crews, along with MSU police, continue to monitor conditions and manage barricades and detours to support safety and access. Bailey said that it’s normal for the Red Cedar River to reach minor flood levels in springtime, so the response follows well-established protocols.
“This is business as usual for us, unfortunately,” Bailey said. “We’ve got it kind of down pat.”
He added that while the flooding created temporary disruptions, the university’s response is consistent and effective.
IPF crews continue cleanup and safety assessments, and some areas may remain closed until conditions fully return to normal.
