The Broadway League proudly announces Bonnie Knutson as a recipient of the 2025 Star of Touring Broadway Award. This distinguished honor recognizes individuals and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding support and advocacy for touring Broadway productions in their communities.

For more than 35 years, Knutson has been a devoted advocate, volunteer leader, and philanthropist for the betterment of Wharton Center for Performing Arts. Her dedication has helped shape and strengthen the presence of Broadway in Mid-Michigan.

Established in 1992, the Star of Touring Broadway Award celebrates the behind-the-scenes champions of the arts—board members, donors, government officials, and volunteers—whose efforts ensure the success and growth of Broadway across the country. Knutson exemplifies that mission through her deep and lasting impact on her community.

A lifelong fan of musical theatre, Knutson’s passion began in high school, when she starred opposite her future husband, Bob, in a production of Brigadoon. Together, they’ve passed on that love to their family and invested in Broadway’s future through annual support, a lead gift to Wharton Center’s 2008 facility campaign, and the creation of the Robert and Bonnie Knutson Endowment for Musical Theatre in 2013. In addition to her philanthropic efforts, Knutson — a respected professor in MSU’s School of Hospitality Business — has provided invaluable leadership on the Wharton Center Advisory Council, including service as President during a key period of growth. Most recently, she played an essential role in supporting the Center’s leadership transition, helping connect Executive Director Eric Olmscheid with the Wharton family.

"Knutson is more than a supporter: she’s part of the heartbeat of Wharton Center," says Olmscheid. "Her passion, leadership, and generosity have helped to shape the Center's identity and continue to guide its future. Whether through her philanthropy, her service, or simply her belief in the power of the arts to bring people together, Bonnie is a constant force for good. She’s a true asset to Wharton Center and an extraordinary example of what it means to be a Star of Touring Broadway."

"Touring Broadway is the cornerstone of how we share the magic of theatre with audiences across North America. In the 2024-2025 season, Touring Broadway recorded approximately 14.9 million attendances, connecting communities, supporting local economies, and inspiring audiences nationwide. Each season, the community demonstrates remarkable dedication, resilience, and creativity,” said Jason Laks, President of The Broadway League. “The League Awards shine a spotlight on the individuals and organizations who make that possible. These honorees exemplify the passion and innovation that continue to drive our industry forward.”

The award was presented during The Broadway League’s 2025 Spring Road Conference, which welcomed over 950 attendees from approximately 135 markets across the U.S. and internationally, celebrating the achievements and contributions of those dedicated to bringing Broadway to audiences nationwide.
