The College of Communication Arts and Sciences is proud to announce that its Information and Media Ph.D., Strategic Communication Online Master of Arts, Strategic Communication Online Digital Media Certificate, Media and Information Master of Arts and User Experience Master of Science programs have all received the prestigious STEM designation. 

This recognition highlights the programs' emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics, aligning with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's criteria for STEM-focused academic pathways. The designation underscores the departments’ commitment to providing cutting-edge education that prepares students for success in a quickly evolving digital and technological landscape. 

“The STEM designation increases the overall value of our graduate programs specifically for international students by offering extended work opportunities, a competitive edge in the job market, and a better path to success in the U.S. and internationally,” said Geri Alumit Zeldes, interim associate dean for faculty and academic staff and graduate studies. 

One of the biggest advantages for international students in STEM-designated programs is the optional practical training extension. Typically, international students in the U.S. are allowed to work for up to 12 months after graduation under the OPT program. However, students who graduate from STEM-designated programs can apply for an additional 24-month extension, allowing them to work for a total of 36 months. This extended work period provides more time to gain experience, build professional connections, and improve their employability in the U.S. 

“The conferral of a STEM designation on four of ComArtSci’s graduate programs underscores our reputation as a global leader in media and communication education and being on the cutting edge of technology and the dynamics of the modern workplace,” said Sri Kalyanaraman, senior associate dean for research. “Graduates of these programs will enhance their world class training in communication science by adding interdisciplinary, research, and technological skills to their repertoire.” 

Additionally, graduates from our college’s STEM-designated programs possess a combination of communication expertise and technical skills, which are increasingly in demand across industries. The tech-driven world requires professionals who can navigate both communication strategies and emerging technologies (e.g., UX design, data analytics, digital media). 

With the increasing integration of technology and digital platforms in nearly every industry, having a STEM backed degree can open doors to a wider variety of job opportunities. In contrast to non-STEM fields, which may face more competition and fewer options, STEM graduates often enjoy stronger job security and greater flexibility in terms of career paths. The growing demand for professionals who can leverage both communication and technical skills increases the employability of international students in global markets. 

Students graduating in the Class of 2025 from these programs will be STEM-designated ComArtSci Spartans, paving the way for future generations of graduates.
