Spartans share what makes MSU their 'dream school'

By: Siska Lyssens, Molly Killingbeck

Michigan State University was recently named to a list of “Dream Schools,” which may not come as a surprise to Spartans.

Journalist Jeffrey Selingo’s book, “Dream School: Finding the College That’s Right for You,” includes MSU in a list of 75 colleges that fit the profile of institutions that provide high-quality education, excellent student experiences and great employment outcomes.

In a blog post, Mark Largent, vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Education at MSU dives into what this designation means for students and their families as they choose which school to attend. What does student success mean to them? Which experiences do they value the most? How do they define their ‘dream school’?

MSU’s focus on access, value and outcomes combined with a priority to provide unique opportunities on a campus that has a close-knit community feel make it a dream school for Spartans past and present. While we can’t help but agree with the designation, we think Spartans say it best. Here, we highlight a few LinkedIn and Facebook comments from real Spartans sharing their MSU experiences online. We’ve removed names and personal details to safeguard privacy.

A sense of belonging

While some dream in green and white and others dream of bringing their own children to the alma mater that made them a Spartan, many commenters expressed how MSU has always felt like the place they were meant to be.

Three generations of Spartans in my family! How could I go anywhere else? I still got those MSU ‘feels’ when I stepped on campus and spoke to students last year on well-being and resilience.

Very proud to be a graduate of MSU. Indeed, MSU prepared me to be a leader in Audiology and Speech Sciences in Ghana, my home country, Africa and the whole world!

A community effort

MSU is more than the sum of its professors, students and staff — the entire campus community continues to shape Spartans into the people they are today.

I got a world class social work education at MSU in the 70s with unforgettable faculty. I supervised interns for 30 years after that. MSU grads are just good people without arrogance or pretense.

I enrolled after returning from U.S. Army duty and joined ROTC. I fell in love with the campus, the people and E.L.

It is the most beautiful campus even in the winter. I never owned a bus pass just walk from the old campus Williams Hall to the science buildings every day and enjoyed the magnificent views.

MSU takes chances on their students and that has paid off big time with future successes. Everything I have and am is because MSU took a chance on me and I will forever bleed green because of it!
