The thousands of trees that adorn our campus are one of the things that make Michigan State University special. These trees make up the Campus Arboretum, a diverse collection of species from all over the world that is carefully maintained by Beal Botanical Garden and the Campus Arborist. Everyone has a favorite tree and every person who steps onto campus knows they make this a special place. This is especially true for Susan Meuché and her family.
Coming to MSU following World War II, Susan’s family lived in the family housing on campus, in what is now Cherry Lane Park near Wonders Hall. While living there, Susan’s parents planted several red cedar seedlings along Birch Road, leaving their mark on campus. Susan and her family continue to visit these trees to this day.
To preserve the heritage of these trees, seeds were collected and propagated by Infrastructure, Planning and Facilities’ Landscape Services. One of those seeds is now a thriving young tree that was given to Susan in May in recognition of the contribution made by her family.
