Michigan State University’s Women of Color Community, or WOCC, gathered to host its sixth annual conference on Friday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s theme, “Culture, Career and Community: Amplifying Experiences to Shape the Future Together,” promised a dynamic and enriching experience filled with cultural celebration, professional development and networking opportunities.

The conference opened with a warm welcome and a continental breakfast, setting the stage for a day of discussions and activities. Attendees were encouraged to network and engage with fellow participants before moving into the first sessions of the day , creating a lively and inviting atmosphere. 

One conference highlight was “Women of Color Cultural Experiences,” an interactive festival celebrating the rich heritage of women through storytelling, shared traditions and immersive activities. Attendees participated in cultural showcases, including a vibrant Nubian fashion show. Guest speaker Rihab Musa shared her personal journey as the founder of her business, Nubian Jewelry, and spoke about the profound impact her ethnicity has had on her identity and life. She emphasized the importance of preserving cultural traditions and embracing one’s roots, inspiring attendees with her powerful message.

In addition to cultural celebrations, the event featured impactful professional development sessions aimed at supporting women of color in their careers. Sherri Reese, MSU’s director of talent for Human Resources, led an inspiring session on professional growth that offered valuable insights on leadership, workforce planning and career advancement. Reese, who also leads the nonprofit Designed IV Greatness, shared her expertise in talent acquisition and strategic planning to help attendees navigate their professional journeys with confidence.

Other discussions included navigating challenging work environments, advancing education while working full-time and understanding the tenure versus nontenure track in academia. Panelists from MSU Human Resources, Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs and other key departments provided resources and guidance tailored to women of color in academic workplaces. They also shared their ongoing efforts to advocate for women’s rights, ensuring greater equity and opportunities in professional and academic spaces.

 

Attendees left the event feeling inspired and empowered, reflecting on the importance of representation, community and career development. “This was such a powerful experience,” shared Emily Fenneuff, advising operations coordinator to the assistant dean of University Advising. “To be surrounded by so many strong, accomplished women who uplift one another was truly inspiring.” Other attendees shared her sentiments, highlighting the event’s profound impact. “I loved being able to see fashion from another culture,” one participant noted, emphasizing the significance of cultural representation and celebration.

As the event concluded, WOCC organizers expressed gratitude to MSU and Lansing community members who contributed to the success of the conference. Their participation enriched the conversations and strengthened the cultural and professional networks that WOCC strives to cultivate each year.

With a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion, the MSU Women of Color Community continues to provide a platform for meaningful engagement, ensuring that all voices are amplified, supported and celebrated.
