MSU’s third campus survey invites Spartans to shape a safer future

By: Chris Chapman

Michigan State University invites every student and faculty and staff member to participate in the 2025 Know More Campus Survey — a confidential opportunity to help shape a safer, more supportive campus community. Following the strong participation of over 11,500 Spartans in 2022, MSU is eager to exceed that participation and ensure that even more community members’ voices are heard and valued.

The Know More survey will measure the culture, perceptions and policies associated with relationship violence and sexual misconduct among undergraduate students, graduate/professional students, faculty and staff on campus.

“Your voice makes a real impact,” said Carrie Moylan, co-chair of MSU’s Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct Expert Advisory Workgroup and advisor to the president. “Previous surveys have sparked meaningful changes at MSU — strengthening policies, enhancing survivor support, expanding prevention education, and improving our campus culture. We are committed to continuing this progress, guided directly by your input.”

Participation is easy; MSU community members can:

  • look for an email from “KNOWMORE.MSU3@rti.org” in their MSU inbox;
  • click the provided link and enter the unique access code; and
  • complete the survey in approximately 15 minutes.

The Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct Expert Advisory Workgroup, which leads the survey initiative, recommended a new survey after identifying a need for more and richer data to inform prevention programming, policy development, resource provision and culture change on campus. Previously, the workgroup developed and administered the Know More campuswide survey in 2019 and 2022, focusing not only on the experiences of students but of faculty and staff all in one place — a first-of-its-kind approach.

Past Know More surveys have led to tangible improvements, including:

  • expanded confidential resources and support systems for survivors;
  • enhanced prevention education and bystander intervention training; and
  • strengthened policies and clearer pathways for reporting incidents of sexual misconduct.

A full list of improvements influenced by the Know More Survey can be viewed on the Our Commitment Website.

Insights from the 2025 survey will directly inform the strategic planning and ongoing efforts of the RVSM Workgroup, ensuring that MSU remains proactive, responsive and accountable.
