Marcio Oliveira appointed vice provost for Teaching and Learning Innovation at MSU

Following a national search, Michigan State University Interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko has appointed Marcio Oliveira as vice provost for Teaching and Learning Innovation, effective March 1, 2025.

In this leadership role, Oliveira will be responsible for envisioning, leading and implementing academic innovations across MSU by fostering collaborations among stakeholders internally as well as with external partners. He will lead a team of staff, faculty fellows and student employees while overseeing the areas of Teaching and Learning Success Strategies, the Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation, #iTeachMSU Commons, Online Program Management and SpartansLearn.

Oliveira currently serves as assistant vice president of the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center and Academic Technology and Innovation at the University of Maryland, or UMD. In this role, he provides visionary leadership to advance integrated, comprehensive strategies that foster excellence and innovation in teaching, learning and scholarly activities. His work at UMD bridges the university’s Division of Academic Affairs and Information Technology, ensuring cohesive and impactful transformations across academic and technological landscapes.

“Dr. Oliveira is an innovative thinker and intuitive collaborator who works with and across stakeholders to discover synergies and advance innovations,” said Jeitschko. “Marcio’s substantive experience and visionary leadership will provide a broad spectrum of support for MSU educators as they conceptualize learning, teaching and programmatic opportunities and develop solutions.”

An educator with over 25 years of teaching experience in higher education, Oliveira is deeply committed to fostering effective, engaging, efficient and equitable teaching and learning. At UMD, he has spearheaded initiatives that prioritize innovative, technology-enhanced pedagogical practices, the design of collaborative online and physical learning environments, lifelong learning opportunities, and the promotion of educational innovation and experiential learning. These efforts have been aligned with his strategic vision of enhancing student success, faculty empowerment and institutional academic excellence.

With a scholarly identity firmly rooted in human development and learning, Oliveira’s contributions to the field have garnered international recognition. As a leader in academic innovation, learning analytics, educational technology, and student success initiatives, he has influenced the evolution of higher education on a global scale and been honored with numerous awards that underscore his impact as a scholar and leader. His leadership extends beyond the university, where he has forged strategic partnerships with industry leaders, educational organizations and policymakers to integrate microcredentials, digital equity and data-driven innovation into higher education ecosystems. His ability to design and implement scalable, transformative educational programs has established him as a thought leader in addressing the evolving needs of the modern learner.

“Education thrives at the intersection of innovation and equity, empowering faculty and learners to cocreate the future of society,” said Oliveira. “By fostering curiosity, we shape transformative, human-centered experiences where every voice matters and success becomes a shared journey.”

Oliveira succeeds Brendan Guenther, who has provided interim leadership of Teaching and Learning Innovation since Aug. 2023.
