In the quickly evolving landscape of digital design, the impact of a strong educational foundation can be transformative. Antonio Costantini can vouch for that. He is an alumnus of the Michigan State University Online Master's Program in User Experience Design. Since graduating, Costantini has carved a niche as a UX designer at Wolverine Worldwide, blending innovative design with his graphic design background to create compelling digital experiences.
“I had been wanting to get into the realm of UX for a while, since being a graphic designer for over 10 years, and wanting some change,” said Costantini. “I came across this program and thought it looked like a great opportunity that would fit into my schedule and still allow me to work full time.”
The UXMS program is a 100% online program that covers the lifecycle of user experience, from research to design to product evaluation. It’s based on academic research in human-computer interaction and the insights of experienced UX professionals.
“Before the program I self-taught some of the UX basics that were needed in my role at work, but I definitely wanted an official understanding of the skills,” said Costantini.
Costantini successfully completed the program in just one year, a remarkable achievement while balancing a full-time job. He credits the steady support of his cohort, professors, and Program Director Jeff Siartofor helping him finish both successfully and on time.
He explains that his weekly schedule consisted of working from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then doing classwork from about 6 p.m. to midnight most weeknights. He notes that being interested in the class topics helped fuel his drive to get the work done.
"Having a formal education now and learning some of the research techniques of UX has enabled me to apply many of those processes in my current work," Costantini shared. "The skills I've gained are actively being utilized in my role right now."
Costantini’s journey exemplifies how online education can empower individuals to not only excel in their careers but also shape the future of user interaction in the digital realm.
“It’s an exciting time to be getting into UX, and the field is somewhat of the Wild West right now,” said Costantini. “This program will teach you to be much more adaptive.”
