Eric Olmscheid, executive director of Wharton Center, is stepping into one of the most exciting parts of his position. He received Full Membership status in The Broadway League and, with it, comes with the prestigious honor of voting for the 77th Annual Tony Awards.

Reflecting on this, Olmscheid says, "It is truly an honor being part of the select group of industry professionals entrusted with recognizing the pinnacle of Broadway's talent."

Throughout the 2023-24 Broadway season, Olmscheid traveled to New York to keep up to date on the 21 musicals and 15 plays. As an out-of-town voter, managing these shows presents its own set of challenges.

"I take the responsibility seriously," Olmscheid says. "Taking notes after performances and carving out time to reflect on details is essential for making well-informed decisions."

There are 26 award categories, and voters are required to see all nominations in the category to vote. Although he's only required to see all nominated productions, it's not that straightforward. Nominations are determined by The Nominating Committee and released in early May.

Olmscheid's role as a Tony Award Voter is due to his dedication to theater, and it provides Midwest audiences with a voice to contribute to the Broadway accolades.  

This year's Tony Awards will be hosted by actress Ariana DeBose for a third year in a row, and will air June 16 at 8 p.m.
