Community feedback sought for Feb. 13 memorial

Michigan State University is inviting all members of the Spartan community to engage in the process of shaping a lasting campus memorial in honor and remembrance of those lost and those affected by the Feb. 13, 2023, tragedy.

The Feb. 13 Permanent Memorial Planning Committee, created in October 2023, has created a survey to provide students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members an opportunity to share their thoughts on the purpose of the memorial, how visitors interact with it and its location. The survey closes on March 31.

Additionally, there will be both in-person and virtual focus group sessions in March to allow individuals to provide further feedback.

Drop-in, facilitated focus group sessions will take place at:

  • MSU Demonstration Hall
    ◦  March 13, 1 to 4 p.m.
    ◦ March 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Hannah Community Center
    ◦ March 13, 6 to 9 p.m.
    ◦ March 14, 6 to 9 p.m.

Members of the Spartan community also can register for virtual, facilitated focus group sessions on March 19 and 20. One-hour slots are available between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on both of those days. Participants can register now through 11:59 p.m. on March 17.

The permanent memorial will serve as a central location for families, loved ones, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to gather or visit alone — in the way that makes the most sense for them — to reflect, grieve and honor those lost, injured and all impacted by Feb. 13. A vital aspect of the planning process is gathering input from the community.

Additionally, MSU’s Office for Resource and Support Coordination is in conversation with those directly impacted by the violence of Feb. 13, 2023.

The memorial planning committee is made up of students, faculty, staff and community liaisons. MSU’s National Charrette Institute is supporting and facilitating the community engagement process. The planning process calls for a request for artist proposals to be posted by the end of the semester, with community input and a final selection slated for fall 2024. Work on the memorial is planned to start in spring 2025.
