MSU No. 1 choice for higher education degree for Michigan first-year students

University plans to welcome more than 11,000 first-year students total, 8,000 from Michigan

By: Dan Olsen

Michigan State University has solidified its position as the No. 1 choice for in-state students looking to attain a higher education degree for another consecutive year. The university is expected to welcome more than 8,000 new Spartans from Michigan, making the total preliminary entering class enrollment more than 11,000 strong (including first-year and transfer students).

“We are eager to welcome this new class of Spartans to Michigan State and to prepare them to identify and pursue their life’s missions,” said Interim President Teresa K. Woodruff, Ph.D. “There are so many exciting paths before them and so much they can do to make a difference.”

MSU continues to see an increase of students of color with the fall 2023 class. Black students represent the largest increase among diverse students, marking an 11% increase over last year, while Hispanic students account for the second-largest increase at 7% over the fall 2022 class.

“The class of 2027 is full of excitement, inspiration and important lived experiences, and we are thrilled to welcome them to campus,” said John Ambrose, the executive director of admissions and recruitment. “Whether they are from Australia, Arizona or Alcona, Michigan, we believe in their collective ability to change the world and to positively impact our campus.”

The most popular MSU colleges among new students include the Broad College of Business (1,950 students), the College of Engineering (1,700), the College of Social Science (1,205) and the College of Natural Science (1,165). Together, the four colleges account for more than 60% of the entering first-year class.

The university’s enrollment projection is based on the number of admitted students who paid deposits. Final enrollment numbers will not be available until after the university’s deadline for tuition refunds on Sept. 21, 2023.
