The Department of Police and Public Safety reported last week that there were three recent attempted car thefts at the East Lansing Campus. The attempts were in the evening at the following locations: Ramp 1 at Shaw Lane, Shaw Hall Parking Loop, and Lot 5 at Delta Court.
Police reported that only Hyundai and Kia models without software updates were targeted. Anyone with these types of vehicles should request recall software from their dealership, said Dana Whyte, the department spokesperson.
Although car thefts on campus are rare, Whyte recommends that employees practice these precautions when parking:
- Close all windows and lock your car
- Double check each door
- Activate/install an audible alarm system
- Try to park in well-lit areas
- Be aware of your surroundings
- Never leave the keys or valuables in your car
As always, if you see something that does not seem quite right – say something. MSU Police and Public Safety can be contacted anytime at 517-355-2221. In the case of an emergency, contact 911 – call if you can, or text if you can't.
