There are countless reasons to take pride in being a Michigan State University Spartan. Here are just a few accomplishments of Spartan faculty, staff, students and athletes, and alumni who make MSU a place where all belong, all can excel and all can make a difference.


Top 100 global university
MSU ranks among the top 100 global universities, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. This recognition is based on MSU’s performance across the areas of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Third-best college basketball city in America
And No. 1 in our hearts. MSU’s student-athletes, coaches and Spartan fans put East Lansing on the map as a top city for its college basketball atmosphere, according to Wallethub.

No. 1 in the nation for study abroad
MSU is the top public institution in the country for study abroad “programs to look for,” according to U.S. News & World Report. The university offers more than 300 education abroad programs in more than 65 countries on all continents.

94% placement rate for recent graduates
Spartans achieve success after graduation through full-time employment in competitive industries and by continuing their education to pursue advanced degrees at some of the nation’s top institutions.

3,300+ inventions over 25 years
Thousands of inventions have been reported by MSU faculty over the past quarter century. Spartan discoveries range from one of the world’s top cancer treatments to some of the most widely planted blueberry varieties around the globe.

Gold rating for sustainability
MSU’s sustainability achievements have earned a gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Sustainability is integrated into all facets of life at MSU, from academics and research to campus operations and partnerships. It’s also a major theme of the university’s strategic plan.

Eight programs ranked No. 1

U.S. News & World Report ranks eight MSU graduate programs as No. 1 in the nation. MSU’s graduate programs in elementary and secondary education continue a 28-year streak at No. 1, and the nuclear physics graduate program remains No. 1 for 13 straight years.

1,000+ student organizations
At MSU, there is something for every interest and more than a thousand opportunities to belong. Students can find exactly what they’re looking for or start a new organization that doesn’t exist yet.

More than half a million alumni worldwide
One of the best parts of being a Spartan is that it lasts a lifetime. Our network of more than 500,000 alumni across the globe stays connected and gives back to MSU and its students in many ways: through service, scholarship support and giving, networking and mentorship. That’s the meaning of Spartans Will.
