Fans of large musical ensembles have a lot to look forward to in early fall as the MSU College of Music rolls out the 2022-23 "Encore! Season" with a slate of performances by the MSU Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, Symphony Orchestra, Concert and Campus Bands and Concert Orchestra — all performing in Cobb Great Hall of Wharton Center for Performing Arts.

Among the anticipated large ensemble events is the performance of powerful, resonating works by the MSU Wind Symphony at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 29, conducted by Kevin Sedatole. Student musicians along with featured oboist Nermis Mieses will thrill the audience with performances of "Legacy" (concerto for oboe and wind band) by Óscar Navarro and "Sokol Fanfare" by Leoš Janáček. Additional works include "Dionysiaques, Op. 62" by Florent Schmitt, and "Yellow, Red, Blue" by Paul Dooley. Mieses was recently appointed associate professor of oboe for the MSU College of Music. This event will also be available for live digital broadcast at music.msu.edu/livestreams.

A back-to-back event at 8 p.m., Sept. 30, features the MSU Symphony Orchestra conducted by Octavio Más-Arocas. The program "Mahler the Titan!" features dramatic works including "Aere Perennius" by Dinah Bianchi, "something deeply hidden" by MSU Associate Professor of Composition David Biedenbender; "Symphony No. 1 in D Major," and "Titan" by Gustav Mahler.
