Relationship Violence

April 11, 2022

It's On Us Week features Alok

By: Chris Chapman

Internationally acclaimed writer, performer and creator of #DeGenderFashion, a movement to degender the fashion and beauty industries, ALOK will deliver the keynote address to kick off this semester’s It’s On Us Week of Action during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

It’s On Us is a week-long, student-led event coordinated by Michigan State University’s Prevention, Outreach and Education Department to raise awareness of gender-based violence. It mirrors the national initiative's charge to stand up for and with survivors of sexual assault, accept accountability and take action to end sexual violence.

“The It’s On Us student-led planning committee has collaborated to put on our wonderful events as we transition back to hosting events primarily in person,” said DeMaris Crocker De Ruiter, a prevention specialist at POE. “I am so excited for this week and so proud of the planning committee, especially our two student co-chairs.”

The event will be hosted virtually via Zoom on Monday, April 11 at 7 p.m. Entitled “Unboxing Toxic Masculinity,” the address will explore themes of trauma, belonging and the human condition. To participate, please register here.

It’s On Us Week is underscored by MSU’s Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct Strategic Plan, which highlights such initiatives to drive home the importance of awareness and action to create a culture that supports survivors of relationship violence and sexual misconduct.

The plan was influenced by the results of the 2019 Know More Campus Survey. An updated version of this survey is currently active and can be accessed through a unique link emailed earlier to all campus community members.

Additional events for the week include:

  • It's On Us kick-off at the Rock: tie dye and whiteboard campaign, 2 p.m. Monday, April 11 at the Rock, Farm Lane north of the Red Cedar River.

  • Teal-Out Tuesday: wear teal to show support for survivors, Tuesday, April 12.

  • It’s On Us tabling: 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, outside of Wells Hall.

  • Trivia Night: 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, Akers Hall Auditorium (room 137).

Sponsors and partners of this year’s It’s On Us events include Panhellenic Council, MSU Safe Place, MSU SACI, Prevention, Outreach and Education Department and the MSU Residence Hall Association.
