Wrestling Pulls Away for 29-12 Win at Gardner-Webb

Ending the match with a heavyweight pin by redshirt senior Brad Wilton, the Michigan State wrestling team took home a 29-12 victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night, scoring bonus points in all six of its winning bouts at Paul Porter Arena.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 3-0 in duals this season, while the Runnin' Bulldogs moved to 1-3 overall in dual matches.

In the first bout of the night, graduate student Julian Saldana had a late lead before Aedyn Concepcion rallied to get the 7-4 winning decision at 125, but redshirt senior Rayvon Foley countered with his first major decision in dual action this season, 13-5, over the 133-pound Todd Carter from Gardner-Webb.

Graduate student Matt Santos also took a lead into the third period of his 141 bout, but was defeated in a 5-4 decision against Trevon Majette. Picking up his first dual win of the season, 149-pound redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania claimed the victory via injury default over Brandon Bright, while sophomore Chase Saldate followed with a 13-0 major decision in the 157 battle with Taylor Parks.

Gardner Webb cut the MSU lead in the 165 and 174 bouts, as R.J. Mosley's early lead helped him hold off sophomore Caleb Fish in a 11-9 decision, and GWU 174-pounder Evan Schenk added a 5-3 decision over redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez to trim it to 14-12 Spartans in the team scoring.

The Spartans responded with three-straight bonus-point victories in the final three showdowns, as 184-pound redshirt junior Layne Malczewski used two second-period near-falls in a 15-0 technical fall against fellow 2021 NCAA qualifier Jha'Quan Anderson. Redshirt senior Cameron Caffey then recorded an 11-2 major decision over 195-pounder Anthony Perrine, using a behind-the-back headlock to score six of those points, while Wilton got the fall at 6:35 to close out Peyton McComas in the 285 matchup.
