Sail away with a 5K

By: Beth Brauer

MSU Recreational Sports and Fitness Services, or Rec Sports, is hosting its second annual 5K Race to Renovate Walk, Run and Roll on Oct. 3. This year’s event will fund Phase 1 of the MSU Sailing Center’s initiative to build a wheelchair accessible walkway from the parking area to the water’s edge.

Michigan State University proudly celebrates over three decades of adaptive recreation. In an effort to continually provide inclusive recreational activities, the fundraising event supports the adaptive recreational programming platform that has set MSU apart from universities around the country.

The new entrance will make the center accessible for MSU students seeking adaptive water sport opportunities. Located on Lake Lansing in Haslett, Michigan, the MSU Sailing Center also is open to the public. “The MSU Sailing Center is committed to providing a safe, fun and memorable experience for all of our participants regardless of age or ability,” said Scott Petritz, manager of the center.

“Currently our docks are not accessible, and our paddle craft and sailboats are difficult for many of our participants to use. With the addition of an ADA compliant dock, we can serve the needs of our participants and community, which creates a much more user-friendly experience for all.”

The project’s additional phases include a launch wall made of concrete where the dock is secured, a dock and launch system that are accessible to wheelchair users. Once completed, the construction will enable visitors to transfer from a wheelchair to a kayak, canoe or paddleboard.

For participants interested in participating in the 5K, T-shirts are included with entries received by Sept. 26. Awards will be given for various events and age groups. To register and learn more about the event, visit the event page. For those interested in other ways to support the project, contact Jody Strank at 517-884-4481 or strankj@msu.edu
