MSU President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., and Provost Teresa K. Woodruff, Ph.D. will be recommending Thomas D. Jeitschko for the position of senior associate provost. Prior to approval by the MSU Board of Trustees, his title will be senior associate provost designee.
Jeitschko currently serves as associate provost for graduate and postdoctoral studies and dean of the Graduate School and will retain that title and role through Jan.1, 2022. An internal search for a new dean of the Graduate School will begin at the start of fall semester. Jeitschko also has been serving as senior advisor to the provost since Woodruff’s arrival as provost in August 2020. He recently took on the additional role of responsible administrator for teaching, learning, and technology at the Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology.
“Over the past year Dr. Jeitschko has played key roles in work related to enrollment and admissions processes and supporting the SIS modernization process, after guiding the College of Law integration,” said Woodruff. “A trusted administrator and proven leader, Dr. Jeitschko has demonstrated his strengths and capabilities to take on this new role in both his service as senior advisor, this past year, and during his month as acting provost in July 2020.”
In his new senior associate provost role, Jeitschko will serve as a member of the provost’s leadership team and lead discussions on the administrative continuity of the Office of the Provost, ensuring smooth functions of the office, good communication coordination, and incident management leadership. He will serve as an advisor to the provost on the academic strategic implementation process; budgeting and planning across all colleges, academic units, and support units; leading central enrollment management strategic thinking; creating a highly effective provost’s office staff environment; developing planning associated with special initiatives; and responding to emergent exigencies.
Jeitschko is a professor of economics who previously served as the director of the American Economic Association Summer Program, a two-month intensive pre-doctoral, residential program that prepares talented undergraduate students from under-represented backgrounds for graduate work in economics and related fields. He holds an advanced degree from the University of Münster in Germany in economic history and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in mathematical economics. His research interests are in applied economic theory, including game theory, industrial organization, law and economics.
As dean of the Graduate School he oversaw the development of a comprehensive strategic plan around graduate education that prioritizes student success; diversity, equity, and inclusion; mentoring; and strategic assessment of graduate programs. He also oversaw the creation and institution of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
An accomplished scholar, Jeitschko has published in a wide variety of journals and served on multiple editorial boards. He has also worked at the U.S. Department of Justice, often advises state attorneys general offices throughout the U.S., and has been retained by the U.S. Department of Justice as an expert.
