Planting a tree for Arbor Day? Groundbreaking. This Chinkapin oak tree, planted next to Linton Hall, was raised from an acorn at Beaumont Nursery. The nursery, run by MSU Infrastructure, Planning and Facilities, has been in operation on campus for more than 50 years. Every tree planted on campus is raised by or cared for by the nursery before it goes into the ground. Photo by Nick Schrader.

Jerry Wahl, campus arborist, continued the Arbor Day celebration by passing out trees and tree plugs to attendees of the tree planting. Wahl is continuing the legacy of MSU’s campus arboretum by keeping MSU’s trees healthy and helping to plant hundreds of trees on campus each year. Photo by Nick Schrader.
One of MSU’s longstanding traditions before a football game is to pitch coins at The Spartan Statue for good luck. Perhaps a penny pedi for The Spartan Statue is a newly established tradition to invoke good fortune prior to finals week. Photo by Nick Schrader.
Commencement kicked off on Friday morning with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, but grads didn’t let a bit of inclement weather rain on their parade. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
Graduates of the College of Social Science await their diplomas at an outdoor commencement ceremony. While commencement looked a little different this year, the class of 2021 rose to the occasion. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
A spot beneath the pergola provides a nearly complete view of the many residents of W.J. Beal Botanical Garden. Over 2,000 different varieties of plants can be found in the garden, making it as great of an education resource as it is beautiful. Photo by Nick Schrader.
President Stanley attended ceremonies both virtually and in person. At a commencement ceremony for the College of Social Science, he encouraged grads to “go forth confidently, joyfully, and as always, Go Green!”
College of Social Science graduates attend their commencement ceremony outside of Spartan Stadium. While baccalaureate degree ceremonies have concluded, the celebration continues with advanced degree ceremonies on May 7, 8 and 14. Check the full commencement schedule for more information. The moon glows over The Spartan Statue after a busy week full of finals and commencement ceremonies. With our students taking center stage as the stars, a clear, moonlit sky is the perfect nightcap. Photo by Nick Schrader.
The class of 2021 has the unique honor of having one of the most unconventional commencement experiences to date. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
