Give Green Day raises more than $1 million to support students

On Tuesday, March 16, Michigan State University’s fifth Give Green Day campaign raised more than $1.16 million to support students and community initiatives, thanks to more than 6,000 gifts from donors around the world.

Throughout the 24-hour campaign, more than 50 alumni clubs connected with Spartans to help students from their communities; faculty, staff and students spread the word about dozens of crowdfunding projects; and MSU’s colleges encouraged support for important initiatives and needs.

A network of advocates helped spread the word online through social media and email to reach a broad audience.

Twelve colleges chose to promote their student emergency funds, as the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored a need for financial assistance to help students address unforeseen challenges. Leading the way was the James Madison College Emergency fund, which along with others offered matching gift challenges supported by generous alumni and friends. Nearly all projects exceeded their fundraising goals for the day.

Gifts ranged from $1 to $25,000, originating from all 50 states and more than a dozen countries, from Australia to Zimbabwe. Early reports indicate there were more than 224 gifts from students, 1,774 from friends of MSU and nearly 4,283 from alumni.

MSU’s Give Green Day success continues an upward trajectory in annual giving and engagement. The annual event is among the signature programs offered by the MSU Alumni Office.
