Facebook Faculty Research Award recognizes machine learning advancements at MSU

The Facebook Faculty Research Award on Systems for Machine Learning has been presented to two assistant professors in the Michigan State University College of Engineering.

It is MSU’s first Facebook Faculty Research Award.

Mi Zhang, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering and Ming Yan, assistant professor of computational mathematics, science and engineering, were recognized in February for their research, “Efficient On-Device Distributed Deep Learning via Importance Sampling.”

Zhang said Facebook selected 10 winners among 167 proposals received from over 100 universities in 26 countries.

“Our program solicits impactful solutions in the areas of developer toolkits, compilers/code generation, system architecture, memory technologies and machine learning accelerator support,” Zhang said. “With this award, Ming Yan and I will develop next-generation machine learning systems that enable efficient on-device distributed deep learning.”

Zhang and Yan have been invited to the Facebook Research AI Systems Faculty Summit in Fall 2020.
