Spartans have always worn helmets, but they also wear masks, especially when visiting campus. This large helmet can be found in The Hall of Champions at 1855 Place, which celebrates Spartan Athletics championships throughout the history of MSU and features a three-story digital media display playing sports highlights from throughout the university’s history. The W. J. Beal Botanical Garden is beautiful in every season. Reflecting the philosophy of a land-grant institution, the garden is an outdoor laboratory engaged in teaching, collection development, research, conservation and public service. These activities focus on a theme of natural plant diversity, economic botany, ecology and plant conservation with emphasis on the Great Lakes region. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.

"Beneath the pines we'll gather..." The grove of trees between Munn Arena and Demonstration Hall was planted by forestry professor Frank Sanford to stop erosion in 1913. In 2009 a team of MSU researchers and archaeology students confirmed the existence of an undisturbed, prehistoric sand dune beneath the trees that is 16,000 years old. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.

Liam Brockey, professor of history, teaches a seminar course on the history of the book, assisted by Tad Boehmer, curator of rare books at the MSU Libraries. Together they examine a copy of photographer and ethnologist Edward Curtis’s "The North American Indian," published in 20 volumes between 1907 and 1930. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
