Student view: Revival of Golden Key at Michigan State

Brittany Ladson shares her experience as part of the international honor society.

By: Brittany Ladson

Brittany Ladson is a third-year medical student in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

It's a three-peat! The Michigan State University Chapter of Golden Key International Honor Society was awarded the “Key Chapter Award” this summer for their outstanding achievements both in the community and in the classroom. Recipients of this prestigious award must host regular community service projects, professional development events, attend regional and international leadership summits, and much more. Of the hundreds of chapters worldwide, only 10 are presented with this award each year. Earning this award alone is an impressive feat and to have done so in three consecutive years is a truly incredible accomplishment!

The entire Golden Key executive board is excited to return to volunteering and their academics in the coming weeks. The 2020-2021 e-board is comprised of a diverse group of students from all majors and levels on campus: Kylie Taphouse and Brittany Ladson are second and third year students in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, respectively, Riana Watkins is a student in the College of Nursing; Karli Monahan, Nikita Nambiar, Nina Dal Pra and Isabelle Simmons are pre-health undergraduate students, and Noelle Dunn is an undergraduate studying marketing and human resource management. The team has decided to take their work further this year and expand their chapter to include Lansing Community College students through the addition of an LCC representative, Nicolle Diaz Hidalgo. As many LCC students eventually transfer to Michigan State, the team hopes that implementing this collaboration will expand their membership and engagement.

This isn’t the only big thing happening at MSU Golden Key, they also have a new adviser, Sarah Dickinson. She is the current Alumni and Donor Relations Coordinator for Lyman Briggs College. She started her education at the MSU Broad Business College graduating with a degree in accounting and then proceeded to get her Masters in accounting from Grand Valley State University. “It has been a joy to come back and work for my alma mater,” Dickinson said. The entire e-board is excited to have her lead the way this school year and help reach their goal of earning the Key Chapter Award for a fourth consecutive year in 2021.

Although many of their events will be held virtually this coming school year, everyone (official member or not) is welcome to join their monthly Zoom Professional Development Workshops. Topics will include “How to be Professional on a Zoom Call,” “Pre-Health Bootcamp” and “Business School 101.” There will also be countless opportunities to serve the community through their annual service projects for Sparrow Hospital, Relay for Life, MSU Student Foodbank and Student Parents on a Mission.

If you are interested in joining Golden Key, be sure to follow “Michigan State University Golden Key” on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or send an email to michiganstategoldenkey@gmail.com for more information.
