Alia Jones is a senior from Canton, Michigan, majoring in humanities-prelaw with a minor in African American and African Studies. Jones is a member of the 2020 Homecoming Court.
I’ve dreamed of being on MSU’s Homecoming Court since my freshman year. I remember watching my first homecoming parade and being so captivated by the community presence and cheer.I knew it was a great honor to represent MSU and my senior class, and I have wanted nothing more than to spend my years dedicating my very best to the institution and community that has made me who I am today.
When I first realized that my experience on Homecoming Court would be drastically different than the experience of previous court members, I was (of course) disappointed. However, there was suddenly an inexplicable peace that followed. I was comforted by the fact that regardless of how we celebrated and honored this year’s court, it is an accomplishment that no one can take away from me.
COVID-19 does not have the power to erase all of my experiences and achievements leading up to this point. Through being a Spartan, I have come to realize that we are not defined by what happens to us, but rather how we choose to respond and react to what happens.
Throughout this season I have chosen gratitude. While I was at home during quarantine, instead of focusing on all that I couldn’t do, I shifted my perspective to be thankful for all that I could do. I became increasingly more grateful for my health, a loving family and a stable financial situation that helped us endure as the entire world faced trying times.
Moving forward, I am hopeful for a new normal. A new normal that includes intentionality and gratitude in every moment. A new normal that never takes for granted the gift of life and treats one another with compassion and respect.
Although it seems the only certainty is uncertainty, I could not be prouder and more excited to face the future knowing that MSU has fully prepared me to be the best scholar, leader and citizen.
