Third annual Diversity Research Showcase winners announced

Held in conjunction with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration, the third Annual Diversity Research Showcase featured oral and poster presentations from MSU undergraduate students and helped to provide students with the space to present their work, or work in progress, on issues of diversity that advance inclusion with peers, faculty and staff. The event was made possible by sponsorship from the Honors College, Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives, the MSU Libraries and the Undergraduate Research Office.

Oral presentation winners:

First Prize $500

Jasmine Jordan for “Alienation and Isolation of Minority Students: De Facto Housing segregation at Michigan State University.” Jordan is an Honors College junior majoring in political science in the College of Social Science. Jordan’s faculty mentors are Terry Flennaugh and John Waller.

Second Prize $300

Jonathan Walkotten for “A Comparative Analysis of Trans and Gender Non-Conforming Health Delivery Models.” Jonathan is an Honors College senior majoring in social relations and policy in the James Madison College and women and gender studies in the College of Arts and Letters. Walkotten’s faculty mentors are Susan Stein-Roggenbuck and Julia Grant.

Third Prize $200

Erykah Benson for “Dissecting the American History Textbook: A Content Analysis on the Erasure of Structural Racism and Oppressed Voices.” Benson is an Honors College junior majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies (Community Governance and Advocacy) in the College of Social Science. Benson’s faculty mentors are John Waller, Heather McCauley and Maribel Santiago.

Poster presentation winners:

First Prize $500

Wisdom Henry for “Neighborhood change in Chicago: A case study of Gentrification, Disinvestment and Displacement and their Consequences on African Americans.” Henry is an Honors College sophomore majoring in urban planning in the College of Social Science. Henry’s faculty mentor is Noah Durst.

Second Prize $300

Hannah Schultheiss for “The Transition to Parenthood: Down Syndrome, Mood Disorders and Social Media.” Schultheiss is an Honors College senior majoring in psychology in the College of Social Science. Schultheiss’ faculty mentor is Sarah Douglas.

Third Prize $200

Antanae Love-Humble, Casey Pearson and Bri Johnson for “Do We Get Along? Understanding race relations and racial climate at a predominately white university.” The students are sophomores in the College of Education. Their faculty mentor is Terry Flennaugh.

Work in Progress winners:

Prize $300

Kailey Konkle, Jiayu Liu and Kelly O'Brien for “Are we caring enough for the disabled? Examining of accessibility for the disabled in the hospitality industry.” The students are juniors in the School of Hospitality Business in the Broad College of Business. Their faculty mentor is Mi Ran Kim.

Prize $300

Chloe Peter for “Bias Busters.” Peter is an Honors College senior majoring in journalism in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and political science in the College of Social Science. Peter’s faculty mentor is Joe Grimm.
