MSU Kinesiology, or KIN, students and faculty attended the midwest chapter meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine, or MWACSM, on Nov. 7-9 in Oak Brook, Illinois. Between 600-700 people attended in total.
Three undergraduates, Alyssa Guadagni, Katie McKee and Tess McGuire, won the MWACSM jeopardy student quiz bowl. They took the top prize out of the 19 schools competing. They competed well throughout the match to put themselves in a position to win on the final jeopardy question, which they answered correctly to earn the trophy.
Next, they will compete against other regional winners at the National ACSM meeting in San Francisco in May 2020. This marks the third time MSU’s team has won the regional student quiz bowl.
MSU also won the 2019 Active U Competition, which is a competition between the best/most innovative “Exercise-is-Medicine On Campus” program in the Midwest Region. This was largely due to the collaboration that the KIN program has developed with Olin and, in particular, Kristin Traskie, who is their fitness and wellness programs coordinator. This is the second straight year that MSU has won this award.
Karin Pfeiffer was the keynote speaker of the meeting. She talked about the role of youth sports to enhance physical activity in kids.
Joe Visker, Ph.D. candidate, won the outstanding oral presentation award. Emily Makowski, undergraduate, won the outstanding undergraduate poster competition.
