Michigan State University earned the No. 1 title for five of its programs in U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools.
For the 25th consecutive year, MSU’s College of Education earned the elite top spot for elementary and secondary education. Rehabilitation counseling, scored once every four years, maintained its spot at No. 1, joined at the top by curriculum and instruction for the first time in its history.
“These rankings show that people around the country think our faculty, staff and students are incredible,” said Robert Floden, dean of the College of Education. “This isn’t about just a few individuals. It shows that we continue, every year, to hire terrific faculty and to train students who go out and amaze people with the quality they are bringing to their jobs.”
Supply chain management, housed in the Broad College of Business, dominated its specialty area for the third consecutive year when it took the leading spot from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. (MSU’s supply chain management also ranks No. 1 in the undergraduate ranking.)
“Broad Spartans do not sit on their laurels. Our top honors are a result of our students, faculty, staff and alumni constantly looking beyond yesterday’s achievements and toward tomorrow’s business challenges,” said Sanjay Gupta, Eli and Edythe L. Broad Dean of the Broad College. “In a business world becoming more global, digital and diverse by the day, employers recognize that the Broad College consistently produces students who are prepared to navigate uncertain and ambiguous waters with creativity, knowledge, confidence and heart.”
In addition, eight MSU graduate programs appeared in the top 20 of their respective areas:
- No. 3 – Higher education administration
- No. 5 – Education administration and supervision
- No. 7 – Education policy
- No. 7 – Educational psychology
- No. 11 – Biosystems and agricultural engineering
- No. 12 – Special education
- No. 15 – Production and operations
- No. 17 – Veterinary medicine
U.S. News & World Report does not rank all programs annually. The programs not appearing on the 2020 list and maintaining their top 10 positions are:
- No. 1 – African history
- No. 1 – Industrial/organizational psychology
- No. 1 – Nuclear physics
- No. 10 – Criminal justice/criminology
