Resources to prosper for MSU faculty, staff

When you work at MSU, there are endless opportunities in any of the 55 major administrative units or 873 departments across campus. Just last year, there were approximately 3,000 internal jobs posted on careers.msu.edu.

Once making a career decision to join MSU, many faculty and staff choose to stay at the university. Currently faculty, academic and support staff boasts a 90.5 percent retention rate.

“We see a lot of people who went to school here stay after graduation or leave and come back,” said Danielle Devota, Human Resources communications manager. “There is a sense of pride that comes with being a Spartan and working for the university.”

Professional development

Employees have access to many professional development programs. MSU’s educational assistance benefit provides financial assistance to MSU employees for professional development, to enhance competencies, for career development or to further their educational goals.

The Course Fee Courtesy Program is a benefit available to the legal dependent children and/or legal spouse of an MSU employee. Employee eligibility varies based on employment. The course fee courtesy benefit covers half of the MSU in-state undergraduate tuition rate and is good towards the first undergraduate degree only for a total of 120 attempted credits.
Learn more about these programs at go.msu.edu/78H.

“For me, one of the best parts about working at MSU is the flexibility and emphasis on work-life balance,” Devota said. “I was able to continue working full-time while pursuing my master’s and still have down time at home.”

Perks & benefits

Employees and their dependents enrolled in an MSU health plan also have access to Teladoc, an online medical care service that gives you 24/7 access to a health care professional via web, phone, or mobile app. Get medical advice from a licensed health care professional who can even send prescriptions to a nearby pharmacy when medically necessary. Learn more about Teladoc at go.msu.edu/qZH.

Faculty, staff living with diabetes can benefit from Livongo, a diabetes management program that makes living with diabetes easier by providing a connected meter, unlimited strips and coaching resources via phone, text, email or mobile app. All benefits-eligible employees, their spouses and dependents are eligible to participate. Sign up anytime at go.msu.edu/6ZH.

Working at MSU also comes with free CATA rides, discounts at campus stores, plus other discounts on shopping and travel including car rentals and airline tickets. Other voluntary benefits include auto, home legal, pet and vision insurance.

Work-life fit

Resources and education to help MSU employees connect and navigate multiple roles throughout their workplace, career and life are provided by the WorkLife Office.

Jaimie Hutchison, lifespan and family services coordinator, says her main role in the WorkLife Office is to help faculty and staff find the fit between their work and home lives.

“My job is to help answer questions employees have about their personal life,” she said. “Whether it’s about relocating to a new area, a veteran making the transition to civilian life or coming back to work after the birth or adoption of a child, we are a resource to help faculty and staff find the perfect fit between their life at home and their career at MSU.”

The WorkLife Office also offers educational sessions and webinars throughout the year on a variety of topics, including parenting, estate planning, tax management, resources for veterans and elder care. Visit worklife.msu.edu to learn more.

“We are here to help faculty and staff reach their goals,” Hutchison said. “If we can take care of ourselves and feel supported in our home and work lives, we can better support MSU and our surrounding communities as a whole.”
