MSU nominates students for national Truman Scholarship

Four undergraduate students have been nominated by Michigan State University for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. 

The MSU nominees are:

• Timothy Herd, a senior majoring in elementary education in the College of Education. Herd’s faculty mentor is Chezare Warren, assistant professor in the College of Education.
  
  
• Katarina Huss, an Honors College junior majoring in comparative cultures and politics and social relations and policy in James Madison College. Huss’ faculty mentor is Louise Jezierski, associate professor in James Madison College.
  
  
• Vishnu Kannan, an Honors College junior majoring in international relations and political theory and constitutional democracy in James Madison College and economics in the College of Social Science. Kannan’s faculty mentors are Mark Axelrod and Benjamin Kleinerman, associate professors, and Benjamin Lorch, visiting assistant professor in James Madison College.

• Jonathan Walkotten, an Honors College senior majoring in social relations and policy in James Madison College and women’s and gender studies in the College of Arts and Letters. Walkotten’s faculty mentor is Julia Grant, professor in James Madison College.

The Truman Scholarship Foundation recognizes students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to affecting change through public service by providing them with financial support for graduate study, leadership training and fellowship with other students.

Michigan State University has produced 16 Truman Scholars 

“Each of these students has demonstrated leadership skills and Michigan State University is proud to put their names forward for this national scholarship,” said Cynthia Jackson-Elmoore, dean of the MSU Honors College.

The National and International Fellowships and Scholarships (NIFS) Office, administered by the Honors College, helps interested undergraduate and graduate students pursue major national and international opportunities by providing information and direct support throughout the competitive application processes.
