Michigan State University is accepting nominations for the Richard Lee Featherstone Endowed Prize, which is an award given to an outstanding senior, to be used for future growth and development, travel, graduate study or meditation.
The award (approximately $4,000) was established in 1986 by alumni from the MSU College of Education to celebrate Featherstone's life and contributions to scholarship, research and leadership.
The winning award recipient must be a graduating senior, majoring in any discipline, who is expected to graduate during 2018, and exhibits an open, curious, creative approach to education and ideas and intellectual ingenuity and curiosity. In addition, the recipient will have demonstrated exceptional character and leadership in furthering their own progress and enriching the lives of others throughout their career at MSU through community service.
Complete nomination packets will include the following materials, sent in a single PDF attachment to Lynne Frechen of the Office of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, lfrechen@msu.edu, no later than 5 p.m. March 9:
- One letter of nomination from an MSU faculty or academic staff member (includes advisors). Letters of support are not necessary. The letter of nomination should be addressed to the Featherstone Nomination Committee, 312 Administration Building.
- An essay or letter written by the student of not more than 1,000 words, which describes their journey to and through Michigan State University and their future goals. The student's name, MSU Net ID, address, and telephone number must be included on the student's submission.
- Student's resume (not to exceed 2 pages)
The nomination letter, student essay, and student resume should address the ways in which the student exemplifies the award criteria. Specific examples of activities and achievements are especially helpful to the selection committee.
Finalists will be notified for an in-person interview. The presentation of the Featherstone Prize Award plaque to the recipient takes place at the appropriate commencement/awards ceremony the first weekend in May.
