Susan Fennell, operations supervisor at Michigan State University’s University Services Logistics, was recognized by Office of the Department of Defense with the Patriot Award for her support of employees who serve in the military.
The Patriot Award recognizes employer efforts to assist members of the U.S. National Guard and Reserve by allowing flexible schedules, time off to accommodate deployment and to care for families, and granting leaves of absence, if necessary.
In addition to her work at MSU, Fennell volunteers at the Cole Briggs American Legion Post 48 in Grand Ledge to assist Lansing area homeless veterans by taking up clothing collections and helps serve meals. She also helps with fundraising efforts. She also volunteers for fundraising events for Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs.
“I grew up in a military family and have many close friends who have served, including my husband, a United States Marine Corps veteran,” Fennell said. “Our military men and women choose to sacrifice personal liberty and put their lives in danger in defense of our great country. I admire Joey’s drive and commitment—and this experience provides leadership, critical thinking, and problem resolution skills. He is so deserving, and I’m proud to be a small part of helping him make a difference.”
According to the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, “these citizen warriors could not defend and protect us at home and abroad without the continued promise of meaningful civilian employment for themselves and their families. Employer support enhances retention rates in the Armed Forces and, in the end, strengthens our national security.”
Joey Kolwick, a Logistics driver and national reservist, nominated Susan Fennell for the award. She is one of a select number of MSU employees to receive this award in the university’s history.
“Susan is always understanding and has encouraged me since day one. I am allowed to maintain my duties in the Army National Guard and at MSU, and I couldn’t be more thankful,” Kolwick said.
The award was presented by Kathie Elliott, senior learning and organization development specialist at MSU Human Resources and member of the Veterans Outreach Committee, on behalf of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
