Zekeyra Phillips is a linguistics major in the College of Arts and Letters who would like to travel the world and learn about other cultures after graduation. What she has found in the Citizens Scholars program was just that, an open and creative culture of students and faculty, which has led to an already incredible student experience.
Why did you come to MSU?
I came to Michigan State University because of the Spartan spirit (e.g. togetherness, family feel) and the tremendous energy among the people surrounding this beautiful campus. I did a college tour with my parents a couple years ago and was blown away by the amount of opportunities a student has at their fingertips. If you have an interest, there is an organization or a major available to you and someone willing to help you take that next step.
Why do you aspire to be a Citizen Scholar?
I decided to be a Citizen Scholar to be surrounded by other people who have similar interests in the arts and humanities and to push me to be my very best. An incredible aspect about this program is that everyone is chasing similar dreams and want you to truly succeed. Peers in the program are all willing to help each other. It is an open and collaborative environment that allows you to reach your goal to make the world a better place.
In addition, I feel the program places an importance in building connections and networking opportunities early on in your career. This is such an important aspect in finding a job after graduation. From faculty to alumni, advisors to employers, there is a network available here that will help you find your direction.
What has your experience been like so far in the Citizen Scholar program?
I can honestly say I have made the most amazing friends in the program. These relationships will last a lifetime. Everyone has such a varied viewpoint and background that helps bring new perspectives to projects and enhances the work we are doing with community groups in our Citizen Scholar classes. The program shapes you to be more of a well-rounded person through these set of experiences. If you have an idea or a passion, you are encouraged to explore and share. I am finding new interests that I did not even know I had every week. It has been the best decision I have made so far in my young Spartan career.
What are you looking forward to most in the Citizen Scholar program?
I am interested in the study abroad opportunity and traveling the world. Language and culture are important to me and there are so many diverse and innovative study abroad programs I can take advantage of through this program; I feel it will set me apart. The Citizen Scholars program encourages students to develop cultural awareness needed to succeed after graduation.
