Michigan State University’s campus has been recognized as a Tree Campus U.S.A. by the Arbor Day Foundation, who is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2018.
MSU has met the Tree Campus U.S.A. five core standards for sustainable campus forestry. The five core standards consist of the establishment of a tree advisory committee, dedicated annual expenditures for campus tree programs, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, an Arbor Day observance and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.
“Thanks again to all who helped with this achievement and I look forward to a growing future for the Campus Trees,” said Paul Swartz, campus arborist at MSU. “This Arbor Day in April will be a special one with this award in hand, please plan on joining the special tree planting at the Union!”
MSU will be observing Arbor Day with a ceremonial tree planting at noon on April 27 outside the southwest corner of Union. The Sargent cherry tree to be planted will replace the removed cherry tree that once grew in the same spot. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to attend, but the ceremony is open to all.
