MSU will host its eighth annual César E. Chávez Commemorative Celebration on Feb. 27. The day of events honors Chávez's life and work as a labor leader and civil rights activist, and highlights leaders from MSU and the greater Lansing community.
This year's celebration, "Building Inclusive Communities," begins with a student leadership conference and community leadership luncheon, set for 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. respectively, in the auditorium and Big Ten Room A of the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center.
The luncheon will include the annual César E. Chávez Community Leadership Awards as well as a keynote address by Dolores Huerta, a renowned civil rights leader who worked alongside Chávez for racial and labor justice. Huerta, a 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree, is also the subject of the documentary, "Dolores." In conjunction with her visit, Huerta will participate in a screening of the movie and discussion in WKAR Studios at 7 p.m.
The commemorative celebration also includes a community unity march from the Kellogg Center to Beaumont Tower at 1:15 p.m. Following the march, event participants are encouraged to visit the Chávez Collection Exhibit, "Michigan and the Movement," at 2:30 p.m. in the MSU Library.
