The Michigan State University Department of Theatre hosted the Summer Circle Theatre Kid’s Camp again this summer, providing 60 students from first through sixth grade with instruction in acting, design, music and dance. The free camp took place June 19-23, and was run by faculty, students and alumni from the theater department.
“It’s really important to introduce the kids to theater concepts early because the arts are so valuable,” said Angel Snyder, a 2017 graduate of the Department of Theatre. “It’s a way to show the kids that there’s an outlet to the world, and keep them creative and critically thinking. You have to use all your skills in theater.”
The program ended with a public performance on June 23, where participants were invited to perform a short play for their friends and family at the Circle Theatre.
“It’s really good for the kids to get a taste of theater that they might not otherwise get. If this is what these kids want to do with their lives, they’re going to remember that Michigan State’s Theatre Camp was where they found that out,” said James Thomason, a sophomore in the theater department.
