Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

To commemorate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Michigan State University has a variety of programs in which the MSU and greater Lansing communities are encouraged to participate Jan. 15-16.

The theme of the 37th annual commemorative celebration is “The Art of Nonconformity: Dissent and Civil Discourse.”

Following are some of the main Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemorative events taking place at MSU.

Jan. 15

  • "Jazz: Spirituals, Prayer and Protest Concerts" hosted and performed by the Professors of Jazz and Jazz ensemble at the College of Music
    3 p.m., 7 p.m. Fairchild Theater, MSU Auditorium

Jan. 16

  • Service Learning Project and Resource Fair 
    9 a.m., MSU Union, Room 50
    Joint the discussion about some of the social justice issues facing the community and create your #BreakTheSilence poster. Sponsored by the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.
  • Student Leadership Conference
    10 a.m., MSU Union, Ballroom
    Open to all college and high school students.
    Free, but must register online.
  • Commemorative March
    3:15 p.m., MSU Union Ballroom to Beaumont Tower
    Sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Mosaic Multicultural Unity Center and University Activities Board.
    Register your group or organization here.
  • Civil and Human Rights Exhibit and Artistic Student Performance
    4:15 p.m., MSU Museum
    No pre-registration required.
  • Community Scholarship Dinner
    4:45 p.m. Hubbard Hall Dining Room
    Free, but must register online.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Jan. 16. Classes are canceled, but the university remains open.
