For third consecutive year MSU apartment rates unchanged

Once again, Michigan State University students who live in campus apartments will not see an increase in their rates.

At its April 12 meeting, the MSU Board of Trustees voted to keep apartment rates at the same level set in 2011.

Under the new rates, Spartan Village and University Village Apartments’ one- and two-bedroom apartments will remain unchanged at $650 and $774 a month, respectively. Located on the west side of campus, these entities provide an apartment atmosphere combining the benefits of proximity to campus with university staff.

Meanwhile, 2013-14 room-and-board rates for freshman, transfer and returning students who live on campus and select the silver unlimited meal plan will see a 3.9 percent increase, which is slightly lower than last year and the lowest rate increase since the 2000-01 academic year.

With this rate change, the double-room residence hall housing rate would increase $136 to $3,636 per year. The silver unlimited meal plan for residence hall students would increase $194 to $5,170 per year, setting the 2013-14 rate at $8,806.

“As in the past, we work very hard to keep housing and dining rates affordable for our students,” said Vennie Gore, MSU vice president for auxiliary enterprises. “The on-campus living experience is essential to the academic success of the student. It’s a mission we take very seriously and are pleased at the services we provide for a reasonable price.”

For about $39 a day, Gore said, MSU’s on-campus students receive an impressive array of amenities, including utilities, high-speed Internet connection, linen and laundry service, waste and recycling services, and on-site staff providing any number of services.

The basic “silver” plan provides students unlimited meals at any of the 11 residence hall dining facilities from 7 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. All silver plans also include free daily access to a Combo-X-Change meal at any of the Sparty’s, Union Pizzeria, Union Deli, Serrano’s or Riverwalk Market retail dining locations on campus.

More than 14,000 students will live in MSU’s residence halls in 2013-14. Two residence halls – Butterfield and Landon – will be closed for renovations from May until August 2014.

In addition, the North Campus Engagement Center and relocated Multi-Cultural Center will be constructed on the second floor of the MSU Union beginning in May. Both centers will be open in time for fall semester 2013.
