MSU hosts compost sale, garden pot recycling

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State University Surplus Store and Recycling Center is having a compost sale and garden pot recycling event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 5 at its new location on Green Way, which has entrances off Service Road and Farm Lane.

The Surplus Store will be selling its MSU Moo Poo compost, collected from the south campus livestock farms and the Pavilion. Moo Poo meets MDOT criteria and U.S. EPA Part 503 temperature criteria for killing pathogens, and it exceeds the generally accepted weed-seed kill criteria.

Uncured Good Stuff will be selling for $7 per yard (or via Dutch auction), Cured Great Stuff will be selling for $25 per yard or $15 per half yard, and Cured & Screened Awesome Stuff will be selling for $7 per 40lb. bag.

In addition, gardening recyclables will be collected in the MSU Surplus Store parking area. Accepted items include tray flats, plastic buckets, plant tags and labels, and all pots and containers with the recycling number #2 (HDPE), #5 (PP), or #6 (PS) on the bottom.

It is requested that participants take the time to prepare their recyclables by removing dirt, stones, and any other contaminants; sorting items by recycle number and size; and stacking containers as tightly as possible. There will also be a plant container exchange; those who bring a pot can take a pot.

In conjunction with the event, the MSU Horticulture Gardens will be holding its annual plant sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Plant and Soil Sciences Building.
