MSU SENIOR CLASS COUNCIL HONORS 24 OUTSTANDING SENIORS

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University's Senior Class Council recently recognized 24 students as outstanding seniors for 2002-03.

Outstanding Senior Awards are presented to graduating seniors who have demonstrated exemplary academic and extracurricular successes, and a strong sense of leadership, commitment and dedication to MSU.

Michigan recipients of the awards are:

  • Jill Nichols of Adrian, an environmental science and management theory major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science. She has been an undergraduate chemistry teaching assistant in the Lyman Briggs School, selections co-chairperson of Mortar Board and president of Alpha Chi Sigma, a chemistry professional fraternity. She was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Eco, an MSU environmental group. She received the MSU Valedictorian Scholarship and a George H. Lauff Scholarship. Nichols, daughter of Jamie Frey and Warren Nichols, is a 1999 graduate of Adrian High School.

  • Monica Glysson of Ann Arbor, a fisheries and wildlife major and member of the Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholars Program, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. She was also a member of the Honors College. She served as president of the MSU Habitat for Humanity, was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, served as a Girl Scout troop leader and participated in Salvation Army clothing drives and bell ringing campaigns. She was awarded the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Distinguished Scholarship and Outstanding Senior Scholarship, the outstanding senior award from the fisheries and wildlife department and the Featherstone Endowment Prize. Glysson, a 1999 graduate of Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, is the daughter of Ned and Jenni Glysson.

  • Steven Migliore of Farmington Hills, a supply chain management major in The Eli Broad College of Business and member the Honors College. He was a member of the Michigan State Marketing Association, public relations officer for Tower Guard and served as community service officer and chairperson of the Supply Chain Management Association. He also was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma National Business Honors Fraternity, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key National Honor Society and Mortar Board. The recipient of seven competitive academic scholarships, including the Jeffery and Kathryn Cole International Study Scholarship, he received the Senior of the Year award from the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management. Migliore, a 1999 graduate of Farmington Hills Harrison High School, is the son of Pamela Migliore of Farmington Hills and Frank and Laura Migliore of Metamora.

  • Katherine King of Fenton, an interdisciplinary humanities major specializing in health and humanities in the College of Arts and Letters. She was a Medical Scholar Program student and served as a resident mentor in Bryan Hall. She volunteered for Heartland Hospice and Habitat for Humanity. King, a 1999 graduate of Linden High School, is the daughter of Gary and Mary Kim King.

  • Ciara Jane Barclay of Flushing, a human biology major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science, and a member of the Honors College. She was president and chairperson of the Lyman Briggs School Senior Class Council, a member of the Lyman Briggs School Student Advisory Council, vice president of the Human Biology Club, chairperson of the Honors College Student Advisory Council and a member of Mortar Board. She volunteered at the Lansing City Rescue Mission soup kitchen and free store, and tutored students in pre-calculus and physics at East Lansing High School. In addition, she was a chemistry teaching assistant, on the 2002 MSU Homecoming Court, and received a Dan Bolin Undergraduate Award. Barclay, a 1999 graduate of Flushing High School, is the daughter of Dennis and Kathy Smith, and David and Jodie Barclay, all of Flushing.

  • Dru Bernthal of Frankenmuth, a horticulture major in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and a member of the Honors College. She was also a Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholar, president of the Horticulture Club and member of the Student Organic Farm and Horticulture Department Undergraduate Program Committee. She worked as a student research assistant, teaching assistant and a greenhouse technician, and studied abroad in Chile. In addition, she received the outstanding student award from the American Society for Horticulture Science, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Outstanding Junior Award, Horticulture Industries Education Award and the Outstanding Undergraduate Horticulture Student Award. Bernthal, a 1999 graduate of Frankenmuth High School, is the daughter of Philip and Dawn Bernthal.

  • Melissa Manzano of Iron Mountain, a physiology major in the College of Natural Science. She was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key National Honor Society, Associated Students of Michigan State University student government programming board and treasurer of the Asian Pacific-American Student Organization. She received the President's Student Service Award, the College of Natural Science Lumsden-Valrance Scholarship, the Dan Bolin Undergraduate Award, the President's Student Service Award for volunteer excellence and the Ford Motor Co. Golden Key Undergraduate Scholar Award. In addition, she spent spring breaks assisting with projects in Mexico and Mississippi. Manzano, a 1999 graduate of Kingsford High School, is the daughter of Bayani and Elizabeth Manzano.

  • Erika Wells of Kalamazoo, a secondary education major in the College of Education and a biology major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science. She was a member of the Student Alumni Association, representative to the dean's student advisory council in the College of Natural Science, vice chairperson of Lyman Briggs student advisory council, a program mentor and tutor for the Lansing Public School District, a residence hall mentor and a teaching assistant. She received the Lyman Briggs Alumni Association Outstanding Student Award. Wells, daughter of Leanne Larson and David Wells, is a 1998 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School.

  • Andrew McLemore of Lansing, a physiology major in the College of Natural Science and member of the Honors College. He was the director of the Spartan Dischords, a student a cappella group, and a professorial research assistant. He was active in student recruiting, Honors College events and as a volunteer at the St. Lawrence Hospital substance abuse unit. In addition, he is the recipient of National Merit Freshman Achievement and Mowbray scholarships. McLemore, a 1998 graduate of Okemos High School, is the son of Kerry and Jacqualine McLemore of Newark, Del.

  • Philip Dabrowski of Lapeer, a physiology major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Mortar Board and Golden Key National Honor Society. He also worked as a Lyman Briggs School undergraduate teaching assistant. Dabrowski, son of Richard and Linda Dabrowski, is a 1999 graduate of Warren Woods Tower High School in Warren.

  • David Bosman of Livonia, a double major in political theory and constitutional democracy, and social relations in the James Madison College. He was a member of the Honors College, Golden Key Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He served as Mortar Board social chairperson, vice president for Tower Guard and was a member of Gamma Sigma Alpha. He worked at the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities and with disabled children at the Fowler Center. Bosman, a 1999 Franklin High School graduate, is the son of Thomas and Maureen Bosman.

  • Jennifer Van Dalen of Midland, an international relations and economics major in the James Madison College. She was actively involved with the University Activities Board, serving as vice chairperson of financial affairs, vice chairperson of spirit and traditions, and chairperson. She chaired the Associated Students of Michigan State University's Freshman Class Council and served on the MSU Bookstore and Union Advisory Board. She is a member of Mortar Board, Sigma Iota Rho, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was on the dean's list every semester at MSU. Van Dalen, a 1999 graduate of Midland High School, is the daughter of John and Joyce Van Dalen.

  • Jacob Scott of Rockford, a mathematics major in the College of Natural Science and a member of the Honors College. He has served on the Honors College programming board, was a mentor and senior mentor in Mason-Abbott Hall and was on the 2002 MSU Homecoming Court. He was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key National Honor Society, Tower Guard, Mortar Board and Alpha Epsilon Delta. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity as fundraising coordinator, and at Heartland Hospice and Ingham Regional Medical Center. Scott, a 1999 graduate of Rockford High School, is the son of Mary and Terry Scott.

  • Jennifer Hendricks of Saginaw, a human biology major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science, with a specialization in health and humanities. She was a member of the Honors College, National Society for Collegiate Scholars, Alpha Epsilon Delta national premedical honor society, vice president of Mortar Board and the public relations chairperson for the American Student Dental Association. She was involved in the Holmes Hall Orientation Team, Olin Health Advocate Program, Habitat for Humanity, Alternative Spring Break program, Young Spartans and the Red Cedar River cleanup effort. She also volunteered at muscular dystrophy summer camps and was a tutor for international teaching assistants. In addition, she worked as a plant biology research assistant and received several scholarships including the College of Natural Science Alumni Association Award, the Dan Bolin Undergraduate Award and the Ernest Green Outstanding Junior Award. Hendricks, a 1999 graduate of Nouvel Catholic Central High School, is the daughter of Larry and Teri Hendricks.

  • Arash Mahajerin of Saginaw, a human biology major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science. He was a member of the Tower Guard, MSU National Alumni Board, MSU Safe Place, Men's Glee Club, and Bobby's World and the Izzone, football and men's basketball student groups, respectively. He was an MSU tour coordinator, president of the Student Alumni Foundation and the floor president in the Holmes Hall Association. In addition, he was involved in the MSU Tour Consortium, and served as an after-school child-care assistant at the Montessori Center in East Lansing, and as a research assistant in the MSU Department of Family Practice. Mahajerin, a 1999 graduate of Heritage High School, is the son of Enayat and Taherah Mahajerin.

  • Brandon Lupp of Sebewaing, an agriculture and natural resource communication major, in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, with a specialization in food industry management and connected learning. He was involved in the Honors College, the Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholars Program and the National AgriMarketing Association. He served as a resident mentor, an ambassador for the agriculture and natural resources program and a state FFA officer. He studied abroad in Australia and New Zealand in 2000. He was MSU's spring convocation undergraduate student speaker. Lupp, a 1999 graduate of Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School, is the son of Gregory and Sue Lupp.

  • Adrienne Nassar of Sterling Heights, a physiology major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science and a member of the Honors College. She was a residence hall mentor, and in her freshman year was president of OPTIONS (Offering Positive Times Involving Organized Non-Alcoholic Situations). She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Golden Key International Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She was a volunteer for Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities and at the MSU Family Practice Clinic. She received a Phi Kappa Phi National Graduate Fellowship. Nassar, a 1999 graduate of Sterling Heights High School, is the daughter of Sam and Barbara Nassar.

  • Jonathan Brown of Swartz Creek, a Lyman Briggs School student who received his undergraduate degree in computer science and master's degree in mathematics, both in the College of Natural Science, and a member of the Honors College. He was a member of Tower Guard, Phi Kappa Phi, and Golden Key International Honor Society, and worked as a teaching assistant in both the mathematics department and Lyman Briggs School. He worked on research projects in both mathematics and computer science and engineering. He also was a reader and tutor in the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. He received an Alumni Distinguished Scholarship, a National Merit Scholarship and the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship. Brown, a 1999 graduate of Durand Area High School, is the son of Roger and Johanna Brown.

  • Michael Keng of Troy, a physiology and human biology major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science, with a specialization in health and humanities. He served as secretary for Alpha Epsilon Delta where he mentored and advised fellow pre-professional students. He was a teaching assistant in the mathematics department, involved in the Medical Scholars Program, member of the Biochemistry Club and studied abroad in China and Costa Rica. A Mowbray Scholar, he served as co-coordinator of the Holmes Hall Beautification Project, worked on several clinical research projects and volunteered at local nursing homes. Keng, a 2000 graduate of Troy High School, is the son of Rudolph and Grace Keng.

  • Crystal Smalley of Ubly, an agriculture and natural resources communications major in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, with specializations in public relations and connected learning. She was treasurer of the National AgriMarketing Association, president of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow and president of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Student Senate. She was involved in the Liberty Hyde Bailey Scholars Program, All-University Traffic and Transportation Committee, Collegiate 4-H, and served as president of Campbell Hall Government and treasurer of the Business Professionals of America. A member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, she received her department's outstanding senior leadership award and the Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Association Junior Scholarship. Smalley, a 1999 graduate of Ubly High School, is the daughter of Ron and Delores Smalley.

  • Richard Chalmers of Washington, a human biology major in the Lyman Briggs School, College of Natural Science. He worked with minority and disadvantaged pre-veterinary students in the Upward Bound program and as a teaching assistant. He was a volunteer at Sparrow Hospital for two years. Chalmers, a 1998 graduate of Rochester Adams High School, is the son of Richard and Mary Chalmers.

Out-of-state students named Outstanding Seniors are:

  • Joyce Rabbat of Oak Brook, Ill., a Spanish major and one of 10 students participating in the Medical Scholars Program on a national level. She was a volunteer translator at the Cristo Rey Clinic in Lansing and has studied Spanish art, history, literature and media abroad in Spain. In addition, she has served on the American Medical Student Association board as a premedical associate trustee for the Midwest region. Rabbat, a 2000 graduate of Hinsdale Township High School Central, is the daughter of Adel and Reine Rabbat.

  • Anne Edison-Swift of Park Ridge, Ill., a double major in journalism in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences and English in the College of Arts and Letters, and a member of the Honors College. She was a member of the Kappa Tau Alpha National Journalism Honor Society and Phi Beta Kappa. She received the School of Journalism Outstanding Senior Award, the Richard Lee Featherstone Endowed Prize, the 2003 Outstanding Senior Achievement Award in Arts and Letters, and the Victor G. Spaniolo Journalism Scholarship. In addition, she founded the MSU branch of the Science Fiction Genre Evolution project, was a teaching assistant in two classes and tutored a fourth grader. Edison-Swift, a 1999 graduate of Maine South High School, is the daughter of Paul and Sue Edison-Swift.

  • Bethany Weaver of Erie, Pa., a dietetics major in the College of Human Ecology. She held numerous leadership positions in organizations, such as the Food and Nutrition Association. She served as president of Respecting and Understanding Body Image (RUBI), an eating disorder awareness group on campus, and was the MSU student representative to the American College Health Association. In addition, she developed a student health advisory network to offer advice to the administration at Olin Heath Center where she worked for four years. Weaver, a 1999 graduate of Fairview High School, is the daughter of Richard and Pamela Weaver.
