EAST LANSING, Mich. - Twenty academically talented high school seniors from throughout the country have been named either an Alumni Distinguished Scholar or a University Distinguished Scholar for 2002 at Michigan State University.
The Alumni Distinguished Scholarship (ADS) and University Distinguished Scholarship (UDS) are the most prestigious academic scholarships offered by the university. They cover tuition, room and board, books and other academic expenses for up to nine semesters of undergraduate education. The total value of a scholarship is approximately $51,000 for in-state students and approximately $89,000 for out-of-state students over the term of the award.
"MSU welcomes these extraordinary students to campus and looks forward to their future academic accomplishments," said MSU President Peter McPherson.
The scholarships are among the most competitive in the country. ADS recipients are selected from more than 1,100 high school seniors who applied to MSU and who came to campus in February to take an intensive general knowledge examination. The UDS program is also based on merit and is equivalent to the ADS award but does not require students to take the general examination.

The average high school grade point average of the 20 students is 4.14 on a 4.0 scale. The average ACT score is 34 (out of 36) and the average SAT score is 1520 (out of 1600).
Of the 20 scholars, 13 plan to major in the engineering or science fields, including mathematics, zoology, biochemistry and premedicine. Majors of the other scholars include international relations, economics, music, psychology, political theory and secondary education.
The students also will participate in the programs of the MSU Honors College in addition to the academic work in their major.
"We are very excited that these scholarship winners have chosen to come to MSU and participate in Honors College programs," said Ron Fisher, director of the MSU Honors College. "They will join the more than 2,300 other Honors College students at MSU who are pursuing honors academic programs, participating in research and enriching the university community."
ADS winners are selected by a committee of faculty and administrators based on results of the scholarship examination, their high school program and achievements, other standardized test scores and interviews with the finalists. UDS recipients are selected on the basis of their high school program and achievements and standardized test scores.
