Abrams Planetarium features holiday and family shows

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Holiday spirit is shining through "A Season of Light" at Michigan State University's Abrams Planetarium.

The show, narrated by National Public Radio's Noah Adams, looks at holiday customs and how using trees and lights and the trimming of houses with greenery can be traced back to the emergence of light.

"There are many celebrations during the holidays that have to do with stars," said David Batch, Abrams Planetarium director. "These celebrations have to do with the winter solstice celebration."

During the show, the "Christmas star" is examined as part of the holiday spirit. The program discusses how the star is related to the tradition of the wise men and what they could have seen at the start of their journey.

Following each evening show, telescopes are available in front of the planetarium to view selected astronomical objects.

Show times are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m.

The planetarium also is featuring a family show, "Zubenelgenubi's Magical Sky." This show uses characters to increase awareness of night sky sights. The show is Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and is designed for younger children.

The price of each show is $3 for adults, $2.50 for students and senior citizens, and $2 for children under 12.
