EAST LANSING, Mich. - On your mark. Get set. Go register for the sixth annual Race for The Place (formerly ASAP2) 5K and Kids Spartan Stadium Fun Run for MSU Safe Place.
The annual 5K run, walk and wheel supporting MSU Safe Place is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, April 16, on the campus of MSU. The Kids Spartan Stadium Fun Run and 100-yard-dash for children 12 and under are scheduled to begin at 1:45 p.m.
The co-chairs for this year's event are MSU First Lady Joanne McPherson; MSU's first lady of basketball, Lupe Izzo; and MSU's first lady of football, Sheila Williams.
Pre-registration deadline for the annual MSU Safe Place run, walk, wheel and Kid's Fun Run is Wednesday, April 5. The pre-registration entry fee is $15 per person. The fee is waived for individuals who raise $50 or more in donations to MSU Safe Place.
The children's 100-yard-dash is free for participants. The 1-mile Fun Run has an entrance fee of $5 per child and includes a free T-shirt. Additional kids T-shirts will be available for $5. Parents must fill out and return entry forms. All participants 12 and under will receive a medal and special prizes. Clowns and other performers will be on hand to entertain.
Pre-registered racers may pick up race packets on Friday, April 14, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Olin Health Center Dining Room or Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Playmakers in the Meridian Mall.
Individuals may also register from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on race day in the IM West Turf Arena. The entry fee for all race day registrants is $20 per person. All racers will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt.
The 5K race will begin at the IM West building and follow a course along the Red Cedar River and finish through the tunnel and into Spartan Stadium. The Kids Spartan Fun Run and 100-yard-dash will start and finish in the stadium.
Sponsors include AT&T Cable Services, The Chickering Group, MSU Federal Credit Union, Anderson International Travel, Computer Warehouse, University Development and Larry Cushion Trophies. The race is presented by Michigan State University, Olin Health Center, Intramural Sports and Recreative Services, Cowles House, Department of Residence Life, University Housing and Food Services, Instructional Media Center, University Relations, University Services, Intercollegiate Athletics and Playmakers.
The MSU Safe Place Domestic Violence Program started in June 1994 and relies on fund-raisers to continue its services.
