As Michigan State University graduates cross the stage at commencement, family, friends and classmates cheer in celebration — but nothing matches the fanfare of the crowd when a graduate appears in the oversized green boots revealing their role in the closely guarded Sparty Mascot Program, a secret kept until graduation day.
Members of the Sparty Mascot Program go above and beyond during their tenure as the beloved mascot. As Sparty, they embody the Spartan spirit, spreading goodwill, giving countless high fives and offering help to those in need. They appear at countless events, including major athletic events, community outreach programs and national appearances, representing MSU and embodying Sparty's unique personality and boundless energy.
This year's Sparty graduates are Zachary O’Brien, a graduate of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, and Zane Francisco, a graduate of the Broad College of Business. Together their footsteps echo with history, becoming part of the legacy of dedicated and passionate Spartans who have donned the suit before them and serving as an inspiration to those who will follow.
Zachary grew up watching Sparty sprint across the field, never imagining he’d one day be him. After transferring to MSU in 2022, a spontaneous application to the mascot program opened the door to a uniquely Spartan experience, filled with travel, traditions and the challenge of keeping a big secret. As he graduates from the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, Zach looks back on his time behind the mask and what it meant to represent Michigan State from the inside out.
