'50 Plus Fitness Workout' at Meridian Mall a free, gentle exercise opportunity

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 50 Plus Fitness Community Program is a free and gentle exercise workout program for area men and women over 50 years of age.

Now in its seventh year, participants hold their exercise sessions in the café area of the Meridian Mall in Okemos. Exercises are done while seated or holding on to the back of a chair. This "attend when you can" workout assists participants in building and maintaining range of motion and strength.

During the spring semester, MSU's Evening College welcomed a new sponsor, Sparrow Health System, and unveiled the program's new name and logo, "50 Plus Fitness," to participants and the public. Shirts, flyers and mall signage were developed to showcase the program's sponsors.

"I have been coming since the beginning of the program and feel that these exercises are very important for people my age," said Sue Byers of Okemos, an MSU retiree. "This program provides a sense of community for the participants. The camaraderie and friendships that develop are very special and the instructors are excellent."

The sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the year. Each session of this annual program attracts between 25-50 participants.

"As a retiree, I am very appreciative that this is a free community program that is offered three times a week," said Joan Martin Alam, an East Lansing resident and MSU alumnus. "I feel better every time I attend the '50 Plus Fitness Workout.' Our instructors are very dedicated to the participants."

The 50 Plus Fitness Workout program is co-sponsored by the MSU Alumni Association's Evening College, Meridian Mall and the Sparrow Health System.
