Now that summer is in full swing, campus is packed with ways to stay connected. While summer crowds may be smaller, MSU still offers a multitude of activities and ways to get involved. Here’s a look at what’s happening this July.

July 1

Jon Lehrer: Summer Carillon Series - University Carillonist Jon Lehrer presents Double Takes, a program of love, summer, dance and impression featuring works by Shostakovich, Ravel and Tchaikovsky, alongside contemporary pieces and his own composition.

July 8

Jeremy Chesman: Summer Carillon Series - Guest carillonist Jeremy Chesman presents a vibrant, genre-spanning program blending classical works, jazz standards, contemporary pieces and musical theater favorites.

July 9

Beal Botanical Garden Tour: Etymology and the Naming of Plants - Join Beal to explore where plants get their names, including the stories of the good, the potentially problematic, the downright weird and debate common vs. scientific names!

July 11

Chill Out with Art - Chill out with some cool art at the MSU Broad Art Museum! Escape the summer heat and unwind in “Jan Tichy: Darkness,” an immersive exhibition that invites you to slow down and stay awhile.

July 12

Garden Edition: Deep-Rooted with Beal Botanical Garden - Join us for the summer garden edition of this popular tour series as we gather at the MSU Beal Botanical Garden with Maeve Bassett, applied ethnobotanist and education director.

July 15

John Widmann: Summer Carillon Series - City Carillonneur of the City of Frederick, Maryland, John Widmann presents a program celebrating America’s 250th with American works, film and theater music, and his own composition on the carillon.

July 19

Music and the Garden: Jazz Combo - Feel the energy and transformation of fire through an outdoor jazz performance featuring MSU Jazz Studies musicians, where improvisation, rhythm and ensemble interaction come alive in the garden.

July 20

Celebrating the Spectrum Welcome Concert - Celebrate the start of a special week with a heartfelt recital by MSU student pianists, part of the College of Music’s inclusive festival of music and mentorship.

July 22

Ellen Dickinson: Summer Carillon Series - Guest carillonist Ellen Dickinson, University Carillonneur at Yale University, brings her acclaimed artistry and innovative voice to a program at Beaumont Tower.

Beal Footprints: Marvelous Malvaceae (Mallows) - Join Beal Head Horticulturist Bethany Troy, on a tour of plants in the mallow family. Learn about care, uses, and how to identify plants in this diverse and surprising plant family.

July 25

Celebrating the Spectrum Finale Concert - Celebrate the artistic growth and inspiring performances of musicians on the autism spectrum in this moving conclusion to MSU’s Celebrating the Spectrum program.

July 29

Margaret Pan: Summer Carillon Series - Guest carillonist Margaret Pan, winner of the 2017 International Carillon Competition, presents a vibrant program pairing Bach with Sondheim and Sting, with music inspired by nature, imagination and dance.

Through July

Now through July 18th, the MSU Museum’s Blurred Realities exhibition invites you to examine the dilemmas tied to dis/mis/information, artificial intelligence and shifting perceptions of truth. See it before it’s gone!

The MSU Museum’s The Science of Salt exhibition reveals how a seemingly simple mineral has shaped civilizations, powered scientific breakthroughs and transformed daily life, available until July 31.

Also at the MSU Museum, X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside Out showcases dramatic digital X-ray images of fish skeletons, revealing the inner structures of one of the most diverse groups of vertebrates on Earth, on exhibition now through July 31.
